How to Soften Sheets using Vinegar

The excitement of putting on those brand new sheets only to find that they are still a little stiff is quite common. So, what can you do about it? There’s a couple of simple solutions to speed up the ultra-comfy feel you were looking for!

So what makes them scratchy?

New sheets can initially feel hard due to the process and treatments used during the manufacturing process. Washing and use will soften sheets with time, but you can speed up the process a couple of different ways.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is not a whole lot you can do to make a poor quality sheet and softer. Low end sheets are made with short staple cotton fibers that poke out of the weave, making your sheets feel rough.

How to take your sheets from scratchy to soft…

First and foremost, put that fabric softener away. Fabric softeners work by putting a coating on the fibers, this will make them feel smoother but not softer. Fabric softeners also reduces the breathability of the sheets.

How much detergent should I use?

NONE… The first time you wash your new sheets, use a cup of baking soda instead of detergent. Wash using a gentle cycle with cold/warm water.

* Your other sheets will benefit from a baking soda wash also. Add a ½ cup to your usual amount of detergent during every wash cycle.

Vinegar

Vinegar, also known as the soft sheet's best friend. Vinegar is truly a great fabric softener, and the smell will not linger. Add a ½ cup of plain white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine before every wash cycle to keep them feeling as soft as possible!

What setting should I dry my sheets on?

For the softest of soft, you should line dry them, but who has time for that? Place your sheets in the dryer on a low with a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls. This will assist in softening your sheets even more.

We all remember the baking soda and vinegar volcano trick from school. As long as you put the baking soda in the detergent compartment and the vinegar in the fabric softener compartment, there won’t be any eruptions!

And remember, sheets are like wine, they get better with age!
